Not too many years ago, a Google search for ‘Kid Koala’ would turn up pictures of small marsupials. Things have changed for Eric San since then.
Ever since the release of 2000’s Carpal Tunnel Syndrome on Ninja Tune Records, Kid Koala has become known as one of the best scratch DJs in the world. He has toured with acts like Radiohead, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Shadow, The Beastie Boys, Amon Tobin, Bjork, and most recently, Arcade Fire.
This Sunday, he’s coming to Spanish Moon, as one third of hip-hop group DELTRON 3030.
While performing with Del the Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator, it’s unlikely Kid will don his trademark Koala bear suit, but there’s no doubt he’ll be bringing his formidable talent to the stage.
Kid is no ordinary DJ: he’s a turntablist. An incredible artist in his own right, records are his instrument. He popularized a method of scratching where, by dragging a section of a record across the needle at a specific speed, he can produce different notes, solo-ing with samples.
Though I doubt he’s center-stage, with adept lyricism from Del and textured production from Dan, keep an eye out for the nimble koala bear, and expect some crazy scratches.
