If you have ever considered starting an art collection, the Baton Rouge Gallery’s KINETICS auction is a good place to jump in.
The annual fundraising event features 34 original artworks from some of the region’s most talented artists. Works can be viewed online at the BRG website prior to the auction on Friday, Nov. 7. The auction begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at the gallery for $40 for nonmembers and $30 for BRG members. Each piece will start automatically at $100 for every single piece, no matter the size of the artwork or original asking price.
“It’s a great way for people who are looking to start a collection, or add to a collection or to have a great piece of contemporary art for their home,” said BRG Executive Director Jason Andreasen. “It’s a great way for them to get their hands on it.”
All auctioned works are by artists whose work the museum previously has showcased. Many of the pieces include blown glass, mixed media on paper, lithographs, photography, watercolors, ceramics and wood. While the artworks themselves do not represent a single theme, Andreasen explained the underlining theme is celebrating the energy of contemporary art and what it brings to the city.
“The reason we call it KINETICS is sort of the idea that art and local art in general really pushes things forward for everything from the city and how a city is able to grow and progress to a more personal level on how we think about ourselves and how we interact with others around us,” said Andreasen. “The kind of idea that art is a catalyst for a lot of forward movement.”
Proceeds benefit BRG programming, which brings the city of Baton Rouge exhibitions, publications, visiting artist lectures and other special events. A portion of the proceeds also goes back directly to the artists.
“When you are purchasing a work, not only are you adding quality, local art to your collection, but you are also supporting an organization that works to grow the arts in this area year round,” said Andreasen.
According to Andreasen, the evening comprises of two parts: the live auction and raffle. Tickets are now available at $5 per ticket for the KINETICS raffle, which is made up of four prize packages valued up to $2000. Some of the items in the raffle packages include:

“They’re a great kind of funk/jazz trio,” said Andreasen. “As an organization focused on supporting original, local art as much as we can, we always want to make sure we have a band for this event that is able to perform local, original music.”
