Bison named America’s first national mammal

Yesterday, President Barack Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act, which made the bison, whose numbers have lowered dramatically in the last century, the first national mammal of the United States, The Washington Post reports.

Wildlife Conservation Society president Cristián Samper called the bison an “icon that represents the highest ideals of America: unity, resilience and healthy landscapes and communities,” according to The Washington Post.
