BUKU Music & Art Project has announced its initial artist lineup for 2015. The New Orleans festival, put
on by Winter Circle, Huka Entertainment, and MCP Presents, has picked up steam over the past several
years by combining local talent with internationally renowned acts such as Nas, Chromeo, Tyler, The
Creator, Kid Cudi, Kendrick Lamar, STS9, Primus, and many more.
BUKU takes place at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans, conveniently located on the Mississippi
River. The waterfront venue sets up one outdoor stage and three massive indoor stages, along with the
S.S. Blu-Ku — a floating stage for V.I.P. only. Local artists for this year’s event include celebrated
rapper Boosie Badazz, as well as up and coming producer Suicideyear.
Boosie Badazz, until recently known as Lil’ Boosie, was born and raised in southside Baton Rouge and
broke into the underground hip-hop scene at age 17 with a number of well-received mix-tapes. Soon
after, he signed with Trill Entertainment, releasing early hits such as “Ghetto Stories” and “Gangsta
Musik” with long-time collaborator Webbie. In 2009 the beloved rapper was sentenced to eight
years in Angola after pleading guilty to drug charges. During that time he faced the death penalty
and the community rallied around him in large numbers — the term “Free Boosie” was born. In 2010, he released his fourth studio album, Incarcerated. On March, 5, 2014 Boosie was released and on the
eve of Halloween he dropped his Life After Deathrow mix-tape. The highly anticipated, heavyhitting
tape includes powerful tracks detailing his time in prison and his views on the realities of his
life on the outside. Stand-out tracks include the upbeat and triumphant ballad, “O Lord”, along with
contrasting downtempo tracks such as “The Fall”.
The only other Baton Rouge artist on the line-up is local producer phenom, James Prudhomme, better known by his stage name — Suicideyear. The 19-year old first gained popularity with the release of Japan, a captivating blend of southern hip-hop influences and unique minimalism. He released his debut EP, Remembrance under Software Recording Co. in September of 2014. With this release, Prudhomme’s career was launched even further. He has been praised for his ability to create a visceral and emotional experience that brings the listener into a reflective state of mind. His diverse approach to creating sophisticated compositions has appealed to a wide international audience. In addition to his solo accomplishments, he has been credited with production for artists such as Yung Lean, Rome Fortune, Main Attrakionz, and Antwon, just to name a few.
Be sure not to miss his performance at this year’s BUKU Music + Art Project.
