It is easily one of the most anticipated movies of the year as Jennifer Lawrence picks up her bow once more as Katniss Everdeen in the third installment of the Hunger Games film series Mockingjay Part 1, which opens on Nov. 20. When we last saw Katniss, she was pushed to the breaking point as her home of District 12 went up in flames and Peeta fell in the hands of President Snow as punishment for Katniss’s disobedience in Catching Fire.
Mockingjay Part 1 continues Katniss’s story, and will pick right up at the end of Catching Fire. The final part of the book series however, will receive the same treatment that Twilight and Harry Potter received before and will be split into two films. Where the films will split is unknown, nor do we know which fan favorite moments will be make it in Part 1. However, here’s a list of what we’re guaranteed to see and why we’re excited.
At the end of “Catching Fire” we discover that District 13 was not destroyed as the Capitol originally claimed, and is in fact a fully-operational district, which survives secretly underground. From the descriptions in the book, the environment is sterile, and mechanical so it will be interesting to see how the film makers bring this world to life the same way they did for District 12, the Capitol and the locations for the Hunger Games.
No role is too small in the world of Panem with how everyone relates and interacts with each other, and with the introduction of District 13, we’re bound to meet a great cast of characters. Hunger Games is also known for bringing in strong female roles such as Katniss and Joanna, and in “Mockingjay Part 1,” we’ll get to see even more examples with the introductions of President Coin and Cressida.
After tragically passing away earlier this year, this will be one of Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s final roles on screen. He was introduced to us as a possible villain in “Catching Fire,” but was revealed to be a major player in the rebellion against the Capitol. The question remains how much will his role change though, now that his actor is gone and will not be recast.
Last we saw the baker’s son, he was held captive by the hands of President Snow, and in recent trailers appeared to be working on the side of the Capitol. How did Peeta become a pawn for President Snow, and how will this affect his and Katniss’s relationship? Heartache is sure to ensue as these two potential lovers become the figure heads of opposing sides.
As we all know, the film is being split into two parts, with the final installment “Mockingjay Part 2” arriving in November 2015. Where the films will split in two is currently unknown, but we can bet a lot of money it will be left on a pivotal cliff-hanger. Regardless, we’ll be counting the days until the final film is released in theaters.
