A new report about a “crayfish” problem in Michigan may have some Louisianians laughing. What we know as “crawfish” is causing concern for many in the state.
According to the report by WXYZ in Detroit, two areas in Michigan have reported “red swamp crayfish.”
“They dig deep burrows near lakes and rivers and can spread quickly over land,” said Nick Popoff, the aquatic species and regulatory affairs manager for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, in the report.
Removal efforts are underway for the creatures, as DNR staff are setting nets and traps and using elect-fishing equipment.
