Companion Animal Alliance’s fifth annual Fur Ball is scheduled for Saturday, April 9 at Celtic Studios. This is the premier pet-friendly event that benefits a local cause. Pet lovers and their four-legged friends are encouraged to dress to the nines for an evening of delicious food, fun entertainment and, of course, chew toys.
“It is going to be a very festive and fun event this year with the inaugural Fur Ball court,” says event chair Erin Reynaud. “A king and queen will be announced that night. The canine court will bring enthusiasm and even more excitement to this event.”
This black tie gala is one of the main fundraisers for Companion Animal Alliance with proceeds totaling $110,000 from last year’s ball. This nonprofit organization took over the Baton Rouge Animal Control shelter in 2011 and has since then worked to improve the lives of shelter animals throughout the community. CAA also plans to build a new state-of-the-art facility that will not only include a new shelter and adoption center, but also a veterinary clinic.
One of the group’s main goals is to find forever homes for over 8,000 unwanted animals that enter the shelter each year and to drastically reduce the number altogether. In order to accomplish this mission, CAA has implemented spay and neuter programs throughout the community. There is information on the group’s website, caabr.org, about where to find low cost spay and neuter clinics, for those with financial restraints. Some of those clinics include: Spay Spa, Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) and Cat Haven.
In 2015, CAA helped to pass a community cat ordinance, through East Baton Rouge Metro Council, which allows them to trap, neuter and release outdoor cats that roam the city. This ordinance has already proven to be successful with a 15 percent decrease in cat intake in the past three years, and over 2,100 saved lives as well.
Upon entering the event, step onto the red carpet for a photo session. Events of the evening include a live and silent auction, as well as Fur Ball court presentation and the crowning of the Fur Ball king and queen. A cocktail buffet will be provided by Mansurs on the Boulevard, and Petz Plaza will be on hand for those puppies who need a break from the excitement.
“Petz Plaza brings in a full spa with grass for the dogs to walk on and toys for them to play with,” says Patricia Calfee, from Baton Rouge Area Foundation. “It’s kind of like a little doggie daycare at the event.”
The silent auction items are currently up for bid and include a 4-night stay in Pensacola Beach, LSU tailgate goodies for eight, spa services, gift baskets and cards, and much more. In addition to the auction, there will also be a raffle for a Tag Heuer Formula 1 watch. Raffle tickets are $20 per ticket and the drawing will be held at the ball.
Event-goers are also encouraged to “rock the vote” and vote for their favorite Fur Ball King and Queen. Votes are based on donations and the canine with the highest amount wins. Choose your favorite nominee from the Fur Ball Facebook page, Fur Ball Baton Rouge, then vote on the main page, furballbr.org.
Tickets for the ball are $150 per person or $250 per couple and $75 per pet. A table for eight people and three pets is $1,200. Check out the website for more information about the event, to purchase tickets or to bid on the silent auction items; or to simply make a donation. The Fur Ball will not only be fun and entertaining for the adults, but also for the pets.
