Former La. governor organized payments to KKK leaders to suppress racial violence, FBI records say

FBI records indicate that former Louisiana Gov. John J. McKeithen organized payments to the Ku Klux Klan to suppress racial violence in the mid-1960s, according to FBI documents, The Advocate reports.

The LSU Manship School of Mass Communication Civil Rights Cold Case Project obtained FBI records focused on KKK member Robert Fuller that show evidence of the KKK being informed of the payments to be made if the organization put a stop to violence.

“Thanks to his leadership, Louisiana was spared much of the violence that permeated other Southern states,” said McKeithen’s granddaughter, Marjorie, according to The Advocate.
