Groovin’: On scene at Groovin’ 2016

Each year, LSU’s Student Government hosts a spring concert known as Groovin’. This free event brings out hundreds of student looking to experience a good time with some of music’s biggest talents, like this year’s headlining artist Santigold.  The event was held April 8 from 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. at the Pete Mavarich Assembly Center, and DIG was there to join in on the fun.

Before the doors opened, students were able to enjoy funnel cakes, cotton candy, popcorn, snowballs, soft drinks, pretzel and good music as they waited.

“The funnel cakes are delicious! I can’t wait to see Danny Brown perform,” said student Bradley Roth. “I’ve been excited about this event all week. I love seeing so many people get together for this event. It’s fun, free, and the concert is going to be great!”

For some students, Groovin’ is one of the most anticipated events of the year.

“I love LSU Student Government for doing this every year because I get to see a great concert and eat free food with the LSU and Baton Rouge community” said Hannah Adams, an event attendee.

“I attended the event last year when it was held in the Baton Rouge River Center, and it was awesome,” Adams said. “I loved being able to see such a big turnout this year, too.”

While Groovin’ always brings nationally renowned artists, the event is known to highlight some of Baton Rouge’s very own local talents like this year’s performer, Ship of Fools.

“I felt so nervous before the performance, but during it, I was having the best time,” said band member Ashley Monaghan. “The bigger the stage, the more fun we have. The audience’s energy was fantastic and I really fed off of them, dancing around everywhere and interacting with my band members. It was so much fun!”

Monaghan said her favorite part of the night was the love and support she felt from her close friends.

“My favorite part of the event was seeing my friends right before the show started,” she said. “Everyone had their light-up rings on, and we were all hugging and talking about how excited we were. It was a good moment, I felt really supported and ready to put on a show, and it made me happy to see them just as stoked about the opportunity.”

The crowd also felt the excitement.

“Ship of Fools was amazing and Santigold blew everybody away,” attendee Baylee Kraft said. “The event was so much fun, and a ton of people would agree.”
