Krav Maga offers more than a workout
Krav Maga is a self-defense fighting technique made from a mash up of many other fighting systems. Destin Thibodeaux, owner of BR Krav Maga & Kickboxing believes that Krav Maga can be helpful to anyone at any fitness level. Their website states that the technique is based on natural reflexes and body mechanics, making it easy to learn, and not dependent on size or strength. Who can benefit from Krav Maga training?
Anyone can benefit from Krav Maga, even if someone goes their whole life without ever having to defend themselves, they will walk taller knowing that they have developed skills in the event that they had to. Plus, it’s a great way to get in shape.
What inspired you to bring Krav Maga to Baton Rouge?
I’m from New Orleans and trained at Triumph Krav Maga which is really the first serious Krav Maga Studio in Louisiana. I got married and moved to Baton Rouge and needed to find a new career. Triumph started taking off and I loved Krav Maga, so I figured why not bring it to Baton Rouge.
What are some unexpected benefits to practicing Krav Maga?
Another benefit of training Krav Maga besides self defense and fitness is learning to be humble and dropping your ego. There is always another level and someone always knows more and that goes with anything in life. Training in martial arts is what taught me this.
What’s one of your favorite success stories with Krav Maga clients?
I just love when people tell me how Krav Maga has changed their life, how it has helped them with medical issues, weight loss, how they don’t mind going to the gym anymore because they have so much fun with our workouts. And on top of that, learning a skillset that could possibly save their life or a loved one’s. We get a lot of women that were, or are, in abusive relationships and this helps empower them.We have huge breakthroughs with this and it feels good to know that we are able to help people in such a way.
Who inspires you?
I am inspired by people that just love to embrace everything that life has to offer, people who are not afraid to try something new. People who just DO STUFF.
What else do you want DIG readers to know?
There are so many awesome things that you can do to get in shape, martial arts is just one. Run, climb, jump, find something that connects with you and pencil it into your life and keep that appointment no matter what. Add a good diet to that and you will be happier and healthier. Add Krav Maga and you will be happier, healthier and harder to kill.
