Yelp! BR was originally founded in 2009 by Commercial Properties Realty Trust, a company full of dog lovers. A group of coworkers came together to put on adoption events for the many dogs in Baton Rouge who needed homes. In the spring of 2010, with the help of Joe Greco, Yelp! BR established the Yelp House, a shelter of its own. According to Jessica Card of Yelp! BR, adoption numbers soared in 2010 and continued to climb steadily in 2014. As of January 1, 2015, Yelp! BR stands on its own as a rescue. It is no longer run by Commercial Properties, although the company, Card said, “had a big part in supporting Yelp! Br and getting the organization to this point.”
Yelp! BR is a no-kill rescue that primarily pulls dogs in Baton Rouge from high-kill shelters, as well as taking owner surrenders and strays on a case-by-case basis.
“All Yelp dogs are spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, heartworm tested, fecal tested and up-to-date on vaccinations,” Card said. “They also receive monthly heartworm and flea preventative and are treated for any medical issues while under Yelp! BR’s care.
If you are interested in adopting a dog from Yelp, fill out the adoption application online at www.yelpbr.com or make an appointment to stop by the adoption house. Vet records are required, and the adopter’s current pets must be up-to-date on vaccinations and heartworm tests/prevention. Home checks are required for some dogs, as well as first-time dog owners. Fenced-in yards are also required for certain dogs. The adoption fee is $125 per dog.
Yelp! BR brings four to five dogs to Petco on Perkins Road every Tuesday and Thursday from 12 to 3 p.m., and 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Without further ado, here are several Yelp dogs looking for their very own people:
Cinnamon is approximately 5 years old and 50 pounds. She has been waiting for her very own person for quite some time! She is fairly calm, but does get excited for playtime. She is great with kids and some other dogs, but she does like to be the alpha dog. The staff is not sure how she would do with cats. She came to Yelp heartworm positive, but after being treated with the slow-kill method, she is now loving the heartworm-free life!
Lady is a 2-year-old Boxer. She is a little skinny, but the Yelp staff is trying to fatten her up! A good Samaritan found her emaciated and tried their best to get her healthy again before turning to Yelp for help. Lady is beautiful, playful, and energetic. She is okay with other dogs, but tends to be dominate. She is heartworm positive and is currently being treated with the slow-kill method.
Lee is approximately 4 years old and 8 pounds. She is friendly and playful, but needs someone who can keep her contained, because she’s quite the escape artist. She loves kids and other dogs. She is looking for her very own snuggle buddy! Lee is heartworm positive, but she is currently being treated with the slow-kill method.
Margie is a 7-9 year old Beagle. Don’t be fooled by her age; she’s spunky, sassy and full of personality! She is good with dogs and older kids. She is heartworm negative, spayed, micro-chipped, and up-to-date on vaccines. In other words, she is all set for a new home and her own person to love!
Pez is a 2-year-old, 30-pound Lab who is always overlooked. He is a happy-go-lucky, excellent dog. He loves his toys and is looking for his very own person to love and play with. This sweet boy loves every human and dog he meets! If you adopt Pez, you’ll have a best friend for life.
Regina is a 2-year-old, 19-pound Miniature Pinscher mix. She may be a little shy at first, but once you get to know her, she is playful and sweet. She is a very athletic dog; she can even climb a 6-foot tall wooden fence, so she will definitely need a secure yard and supervision! She loves other dogs and would love to be your current dog’s new playmate!
Angel is a 2-year-old Ridgeback mix. This beautiful girl was found as a puppy tied to a tree in pouring rain. She has grown up at the Yelp house and is currently thriving in her foster home. She loves people and other dogs. She is heartworm negative and house-trained. She would love a home and a person of her very own!
