What’s your typical lunch between classes? A number three with medium fries from McDonald’s? A slice of pizza from The 459? A granola bar from the bottom of your book sack, half crushed by your calculus textbook?
There’s something a little more highbrow tucked away near Barnes & Noble: The Club at Union Square. Previously know as The Faculty Club, LSU’s best-kept secret boasts high ceilings, smooth jazz, white linen tablecloths, and — best of all — a menu of delicious dishes you can purchase with Paw Points. Don’t let anyone tell you your meal plan tops out at Chick-fil-A.
So, what are you in the mood for? A loaded po’boy with crunchy bread and fresh toppings? Cajun crab cakes with jumbo lump crabmeat and remoulade? Catfish sautéed in almond meuniere sauce, or maybe even a succulent grilled pork chop with orange marmalade and BBQ butter? You can have it all, and you don’t even have to leave campus.
After sampling some of the clubs offerings, DIG has a few menu highlights to suggest for the discerning student diner.
It’s been said that queso and beer are the lifeblood of the American college student. Well, Paw Points may not be able to snag you a beer at The Club, but they can certainly get you an excellent bowl of queso. This creamy, addictive appetizer combines the best of Mexican and Creole cuisines with ground, blackened alligator folded into an irresistible white jalapeno queso. Seriously, we dare you to stop eating before you hit the bottom of the bowl. You just can’t.
Tomato Mozzarella Caprese
If you spend most of your week chowing down on Top Ramen and Pizza Rolls, you need something fresh in your life. This elegant caprese salad is the perfect palette cleanser for the typical college diet, with ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and a homemade balsamic reduction that is beautiful in its simplicity. With bright colors and brighter flavors, this dish is the perfect midday pick-me-up. Give it a try if you’re looking for a boost before your next attempt at that term paper or dragging after a rough exam.
Fried Green Tomato Grilled Cheese
Ah, the grilled cheese sandwich. It may be a staple of college cuisine, but this unforgettable (and undeniably southern) rendition boldly goes where no grilled cheese has gone before. Fresh green tomatoes are friend to crispy perfection and layered with applewood smoked bacon and plenty of cheddar cheese, then grilled up between slices of Texas toast. The best part? The outside of the sandwich is crusted with a crunchy coat of parmesan cheese. This sandwich is truly beyond your ordinary Kraft single on white bread. One bite will have you buzzing all day.
