Ty Larkins is a young, Baton Rouge-based lawyer turned interior designer. Larkins isn’t just any up and coming interior designer either. Since he started working on homes 10 years ago, his designs have been featured in magazines such as Baton Rouge’s own 225 Magazine, Southern Living and House Beautiful. He has also been featured on many upscale interior design blogs and has won awards for his work. Not only that, but he has been featured on the HGTV series Dream House.
One may wonder how Larkins made the transition from attorney to an interior designer. Larkins said that it was always something he was interested in. He started out as an architecture major at LSU but then switched to another program shortly after.
“I got out of the program and went into political science,” said Larkins. “I actually got completely on another track and wound up going to law school, becoming a lawyer and practicing law for a number of years before I kind of realized I should have kept my first mind and stayed with architecture and design. Going back to interior design was going back to my first love.”
Larkins started designing interiors in a very casual way. He began by fixing up older houses to sell, and then got involved in investment properties and doing spec houses. He started learning about construction, and what goes into making a space beautiful. Larkins used these opportunities to gain practical experience while he was still practicing law.
Word of mouth from friends and family also helped Larkins out with his beginnings in interior design. He said that he and his wife fixed up and decorated one of their first houses, and word got out about how nice it looked. Friends would bring people over to see how it looked, and the rest is history.
“It kind of started like that, it was very casual,” Larkins said. “People would say ‘Oh wow Ty, you’ve got really great taste’ and ‘If you were ever to retire from law, you would defi nitely have the skill to do something else.’ It kind of started off as people joking around, and one thing lead to another, and it did turn out to be this second career.”
At Ty Larkins Interiors, they customize rooms to meet the client’s needs, but they do have a signature style that people know them for. “Typically what we do is actually a mixture of modern, vintage and antiques all in the same space,” said Larkins. “We think when it’s done like that, it’s a little more complex. We layer diff erent genres of pieces together, and it keeps a space from reading too much like one note.”Larkins also said that in addition to having beautiful pieces from a variety of diff erent manufacturers in his lovely showroom, he has designed some of the pieces personally.
“Some of the pieces are ones in which we’ve designed,” said Larkins “But we also carry a number of diff erent well-known manufacturers. We’ve got one of a kind pieces, vintage pieces, antiques and new things. So we really try to keep a good diversity of product offerings.”
Larkins said that his favorite part of the design process is adding the Ty Larkins Interiors flare to projects, and making things that his clients love. When Larkins meets with a new client, he gathers information about what they like and what they need from their space, and he then designs them a space that is totally their own.
“Anyone can go out and pick out individual things that are beautiful, or things they love,” Larkins said. “The thing that is the big difference maker is not the things themselves, but how they’re put together that makes all the difference in the world. And that’s where we think we really add a lot of value to the artistic process of design.”
