Resale revival: Meta Exchange focuses on resale clothing trend

In the past few years, what has been dubbed the “sharing” economy has taken off in Baton Rouge. With Uber and Airbnb, anyone can share a ride or their home and make a few extra dollars. Another business with this concept that has been growing in popularity in the past few months is Meta Exchange.

Employee Chelsea Layne at the women’s resale clothing shop says, “Our business has been expanding as more people find out about it.” As a whole, the resale clothing market has been expanding as more people catch on to the concept.

At Meta Exchange, customers can buy and sell previously owned clothing, typically at discount prices. The business focuses on women’s clothing only and typically seeks out higher end brands and what is currently in style.

“We focus on seeking out designer pieces that we believe are in style,” says Layne.

Because the majority of the items are second hand, customers have the benefit of low prices, such as dresses starting at $9 or designer shoes at $5.

As well as being able to purchase items, customers can also sell items they no longer want. Customers can also make trades if they are just looking for something new. In this regard, shopping at Meta Exchange is somewhat like a fun scavenger hunt, with a constantly changing inventory of items, you can come across treasures or things you don’t typically see every day.

“We try to find pieces that are a little outside of the box,” says Layne, who recommends that customers visit consistently, as the products change so frequently.

Resale shops can be a little intimidating, with so many brands and the uncertainty of not know exactly what they will have, it can be hard going into a resale shop with an idea of what you want.

“Try to be open minded,” says Layne, “and make sure to shop across all sizes.”

Layne recommends, when shopping resale, to come in and ask questions about what they have in stock and what styles they think are trending. She also recommends not limiting yourself to one particular size in a retail shop because there are so many brands that all size differently.

As spring approaches and you are doing a spring cleaning of your closet, you might consider bringing a few items to a resale shop and trading them in.

Meta Exchange is located across from Perkins Rowe and is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
