As the weather gets colder, we are slowly beginning to pull out our jackets and coats that we haven’t seen since Mardi Gras from the back of our closets. While many of our coats are classic staples that will never go out of style, sometimes you may want to add that one outerwear piece that is on trend for the year.
What has been great the last couple of years with fashion is many trendy things have lasted through multiple years allowing us to be a little more adventurous with our wardrobes.
Faux fur vests
This outerwear trend has been around for the last couple of years and doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Also with the slow return of ‘70s fashion with the return of flare leg jeans and fringe, the fur vest is a great piece to complete the look and add a hint of Janis Joplin flair.
Fur vests are a fun, glamorous piece. They can be paired with a pair of tights or skinny jeans, knee high boots, a long sleeve top and floppy hat for a Jennifer Lopez-style look.
They can also be more of a retro bohemian piece if paired with a more ‘70s inspired look. Try pairing the vest with booties, flare leg jeans and a turtle neck top.
Brooklynn’s Boutique as well as Hey, Penelope offer a great selection of fur vests at a price that will not break the bank. Both stores offer multiple styles, lengths and colors for under $100.
Capes have slowly made their return thanks to fashionable shows such as Scandal and American Horror Story: Hotel.
Capes bring an air of sophistication and power, especially when paired with a pair of leather opera length gloves. For an old Hollywood look go for a long dramatic cape. Try your best not to allow the cape to fall past your ankles to avoid having someone or even yourself step on it.
If you want to make the look a little more casual, choose a short length cape that hits right below the hips and ties at the waist. Prints such as plaid will also give the cape more of a casual feel.
By having a shorter length cape, you can wear them to football games and parades without having to worry about them getting stepped on or dragging behind you on the ground getting dirty in large crowds.
Vertage Clothing offers a cute, short length, plaid cape with a faux fur collar and a tie waist for only $68 dollars, which is a steal compared to similar styles found at Nordstrom.
Long trench coat
A few years back we saw the return of the trench coat in shorter lengths. We also saw them modified with the addition of leather sleeves and the choices of colors other than the classic khaki or black.
This year we see the return of the classic long trench coat. Like the long line cape, the long trench is perfect for those dressier outfits, especially with a nice dress.
With the hemlines of dresses and skirts getting a little longer, it is perfect that the length of coats are getting longer as well. Longer trench coats also look nice with a pair of skinny jeans and booties.
To avoid adding too much volume, try to keep your outfit under the jacket sleek and simple.
So with the fact that trends are beginning to last longer and the availability of the trend at almost any price point, we can now be a little more adventurous with or wardrobe. Instead of the old unflattering coat, try a new trend and have fun.
