Street Style

By Mickey Hightower

Effortless and natural are the key words to describing Courtney Myer’s style. Not just a beautiful face, this child care specialist and preschool teacher designs and makes clothing and accessories for herself, friends, and family. Also an accomplished costume designer, she finds a way to balance her career and her passion for fashion.

1. How do you describe your style?
Its super easy-going and laid-back, you can absolutely be cute and comfortable at the same time! I’m not too frou frou, but I do love wearing bright colors and interesting prints. When I make clothes for myself, those are the fabrics I’m drawn to.

2. Where do you shop?
Old Navy for staples, Lane Bryant, and Torrid. Plus, I make a lot of my own clothes. I love to design, and make things for myself that I can’t find anywhere else.

3. What is your favorite thing to see on a man?
A well-fitting jacket is always a good look. I’m all about a good sports coat, old fashioned tweed with elbow patch in a tapered fit.

4. What’s one thing from your closet you’re definitely taking in your move to Texas?
My cardigans! They are the perfect outfit accent. They can subdue a bright outfit, or add color to a plain one.

Outfit Breakdown
Shirt: Old Navy $10
Skirt: Handmade $10
Shoes: Target $12
Wallet: Wal-Mart $10

1. How do you describe your style?
My style has a classic base, but I definitely have some eclectic flair in how I dress myself. I work in fashion, so I’m always experimenting with color, pattern, prints, and trends.

2. Where do you shop?
I’m a huge fan of J.Crew. Also love Archipelago.

3. What will be a big fashion trend for men this fall?
I think suspenders for men will be back in a big way. There’s a big return to classic, sophisticated style and accessories that compliment that aesthetic. Suspenders fit that bill.

4. Where do you get your style inspiration?
Due to my work as a buyer, I get a first look at line sheets and look books from designers and apparel companies. Sometimes, I’m up on collections that are three seasons ahead of what is currently out, so that’s where I get a lot of my fashion and style inspirations. I can see what’s coming, and tailor it to my taste.

Outfit Breakdown:
Shirt – J.Crew $ 130
Shorts – J.Crew $90
Shoes – Rainbows $50
Glasses – Eyemax $190

Fashion Chatter with Mickey:
In the past decade or so, there has been a big return to artisan crafts such as sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Many young people have rediscovered these outlets, not only because they are creative, but because they have tangible results. Although they can seem intimidating to learn, many craft stores offer introductory lessons for beginners or you can learn from a friend of family member. Just like Courtney, you could be just a few lessons from amping up your style with your own designs!
