Magpie Café takes its iced coffee seriously. Besides its cold brew and typical iced coffee options, it also offers two unordinary cold coffee beverages, the Shakerato and the Roosevelt.
“The Shakerato is like a drinkable dessert, a great treat for the end of a long day,” says Magpie’s director of coffee Wallis Watkins.
It is a spin on a traditional European coffee beverage by the same name. Magpie Cafe adds two individual twists to its drink. First, they add half and half for an airy creaminess. Second, the café adds a splash of agave syrup for an added sweetness.
The entire thing is shaken with ice and poured into a glass. Although Magpie uses an espresso shot and it won’t taste exactly the same, we can create a similar drink at home. Here’s how:
Basic Cold Brew: Take your favorite amount of coffee grounds for your usual drink and double it. Brew using your favorite method. You should have a coffee that is much, much stronger than normal. Pour into a pitcher filled with ice. Let the pitcher sit in your fridge overnight.
To make your own Shakerato:
Add 4 ounces of your cold brew coffee to a shaker. Add 1 1/2 ounces half and half. Add a splash of agave syrup or your desired amount of sweetness. Fill your shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a glass and serve/drink.
