The Drink: Abita Strawgator

By Cody Worsham

In the quest to create a beer that is both refreshing and potent, bars have long been mixing Abita’s Andygator, a Helles Doppelbock with more kick than the average beer, with sweeter brews like Purple Haze or strawberry beers. These mixed beers are popular at local diners like The Chimes, whose mixes “The Barney” and “Pink Panther” are popular staples. Now, Abita has taken it upon themselves to provide such a ready-made concoction with the latest in its big beer line: Strawgator. At 8.0% ABV, it’s got all the bite of Andygator, but a post-filtration strawberry juice addition gives it a crisp, sweet flavor and greater drinkability. With a fruity aroma, a slightly cloudy golden pour, and a delicate hoppiness, Strawgator is billed as a desert beer, but try it with spicy dishes like boudan or jambalaya – it’s not heavy and will cool your palate. Note that it does come in a 22 oz. bottle, so if you’re including it in your tailgating kit this weekend, bring a frosted mug or pint glass to keep it cool. It will absolutely return the favor.

Find Strawgator at Whole Foods for $4.49.
