“Rockin’ Chair” by Gwen McCrae – In 1975 this vivacious track hit #1 on the R&B charts as well as #9 on the U.S Billboard Top 100. McCrae’s sensual lyricism, together with her inescapable groove made her one of the premier funk vocalists of her time. In the words of Gwen, let this one play, and “rock away.”

“Xtalk” by Hundred Waters – After releasing their self-titled debut album superstar DJ Skrillex signed the group to his OWSLA label. Since joining the OWSLA family, Hundred Waters released their latest album, The Moon Rang Like a Bell. “Xtalk” showcases Miglis’ ethereal vocals, and the tracks electronic sound makes Skrillex’s decision to sign Hundred Waters to OWSLA an obvious choice.

“Buses Splash With Rain” by Frankie Cosmos – 19-year-old Greta Kline, better known as Frankie Cosmos, delivers this smooth track off of her debut release Zentropy. The steady guitar and driving drum work makes for an awesome energy-laden tune.

“The Weight” by The Band – This is a song that everyone knows, even if they don’t know the name of The Band that performs it. It’s got everything you need in a classic: biblical allusion, backing piano, a harmonious chorus, solid riffs, and awesome organ work.

“Animal Ambition” by 50 Cent – “I’m tamed fresh out the cage” utters 50 by the song’s end, but this single really feels stale. The title track off his new album, “Animal Ambition” isn’t ambitious enough. The stripped down hook lacks the risky lyrical accompaniment it needs. Jackson’s first album post-Shady/Aftermath could use Dre and Eminem’s touch.
