We tried four mascaras with lofty claims. Find out how they held up.

This month, I’m talking mascara, the No. 1 makeup product guaranteed to make you look more awake when underneath, you actually look like you just binge watched the latest season of “Game of Thrones.” Of all the makeup products out there, mascara also tends to have the loftiest claims. I tested four mascaras, two drugstore and two high-end, to see if they lived up to their claims.

Ciaté London Triple Shot Mascara
Claims: “Instantly lengthens, volumizes, defines and curls to brighten, enhance and enlarge the appearance of eyes.”
$22, sephora.com
OK, it’s a little crazy how accurate the description for this mascara is. I didn’t curl my lashes before I applied any of these mascaras, but this one made me look like I applied falsies. I even felt my lashes to see what was up, and they stayed put. This was a definite win.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
Claims: Um…
$23, sephora.com
If you like clumpy lashes with lots of volume, this mascara is the ticket. I applied it in the morning and didn’t take it off until bedtime, and while my lashes looked like a supermodel’s, the amount of black under my eyes at the end of the day made my bags look a lot worse. This mascara is good for a night out with an especially dramatic look, but I wouldn’t wear it all day. And um…the name is incorrect.

Wet n Wild Max Fanatic Cat Eye Mascara
Claims: “8X The Curl, 35% Longer Lashes, 8X Volume”
$4.91, walmart.com
Spoiler: This mascara did not instantly give me a cat eye. While the wand is shaped in a way that would make you think you don’t need winged eyeliner, the actual application isn’t that different from your run-of-the-mill mascara. That being said, this mascara gave me fabulous lashes and was my second favorite of the bunch. Rename this mascara, and you’ve got yourself a winner.

Revlon Ultimate All-In-One Mascara
Claims: Delivers five benefits in one mascara—Volume, Length, Definition, Lift, Intense Color
$5.97, walmart.com
When I opened this mascara, I made a face that had my co-workers rolling. The wand is tiny, too tiny to make a huge difference in all the areas the mascara claims. For a bottom lash mascara, this would work well.
