Dig Baton Rouge

You’re Invited

Now, what do you bring?

The summer is a great time to gather with friends and family for barbeques, potlucks, and celebrations. When you get the invite, you’re stoked. That is, until they ask you to bring something. Not a whiz in the kitchen? No problem; we’ve found some local solutions that are sure to impress at your next gathering. These items are so delicious, people will be begging you for your recipe. Whether you fess up or not is up to you.

1. Blueberry Cobbler
Calvin’s Bocage Market    7675 Jefferson Hwy
An amazing bottom crust, loads of blueberries, and a criss-cross pattern of pastry topping make this cobber a classic southern favorite. This dessert comes in a few sizes and is available with several fruit options. Make sure you call at least one day in advance for a full tray like the one pictured.

2. Watermelon Salad
Twine Meat Market and Deli    2921 Government St.
This light, refreshing salad will be a big hit on a hot summer day. With tomato, cucumber, feta, radishes and a mint vinaigrette it not only tastes amazing, it looks amazing too. Bonus points for it being a gluten free option.

3. Spinach Madeline
Maxwell’s Market    3 Locations
Spinach Madeline has a fun history, supposedly being invented right here in Baton Rouge in the 1950’s. Maxwell’s nails this dish with spinach, cheese, and a little kick of heat. Serve it up with pita chips or crackers.

4. BBQ Baked Beans
Smokin’ Aces BBQ    2504 Government St
As far as BBQ beans go, these are off the charts. The sauce is sweet and smokey, and is only enhanced by the loads of meat accompaning every bite of beans. For being a staple sidedish of cookouts, these beans are so good, they will be the star.

5. Rustico Bread
Trader Joe’s    3535 Perkins Rd.
Soft Multigrain Rustico Bread is a perfect compliment to any meal. You can serve it right out of the bag, or lightly butter it and throw it on the grill.

6. Savory Cajun Trinity dip mix
Alexander’s Highland Market    18111 Highland Rd
While this dry mix was originally intended to use as a dip by adding cream cheese or sour cream, we found a recipe for Bloody Marys on the maker’s Instagram @mostdelightfulfoods. The options for this mix are endless.

7. Pasta Salad
Anthony’s Italian Deli    5575 Government St
In our humble opinion, no meal would be complete without pasta. This pasta salad from Anthony’s is full of flavor with tri-color Rotini Pasta, provolone, salami, mushrooms, turkey, capers, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, romano cheese, and a homemade balsamic vinaigrette.
