Every Saturday morning, a crew in safety vests fans out across Baton Rouge with grabbers and trash bags. They call themselves litter warriors, and the numbers back up the name.
Keep Tiger Town Beautiful is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that organizes litter cleanup and beautification work around the Baton Rouge area. The group keeps a running log of every pickup, and its grand total has passed 50,173 bags of trash. The log also tallies 16,684 signs under a category it calls litter on a stick.
## A Week in the Log
The Saturday cleanups get the spotlight, but the log shows volunteers working all week. Small teams and solo regulars hit spots like Prescott Road, Highland and Lee, and the edges of busy shopping centers on Airline Highway and Coursey Boulevard. The week of Oct. 19 alone added 263 bags, bringing the October total to 771.
Saturday cleanups move around town. This weekend's was set for Westdale Heights Academic Magnet on College Drive from 8 to 10 a.m. Upcoming meet spots are posted in a schedule you can download from the group's homepage.
## Bring Your Team
Businesses and organizations can schedule their own cleanup day through the website. The group provides litter grabbers, trash bags and safety vests, and someone will meet your team on site to walk through best practices. All you need is clothing suited to the weather and the terrain.
The group's About page links to local news features on Jennifer Richardson, the familiar face behind the effort, along with coverage of cleanups along the Mississippi River and a holiday-season push to keep litter off the roads.
## Other Ways to Help
Donations pay for grabbers, bags and vests, and they're tax deductible. You can give once or monthly online, or buy supplies from the group's Amazon wishlist. Some local shops chip in too. MIMOSA Handcrafted currently sends 1% of every sale to the group.
For questions, call (225) 800-7205 or email [email protected]. Then grab a pair of gloves. Baton Rouge looks better one bag at a time.
