Some Baton Rouge regulars may remember Basel's Market from Highland Road. These days, its chicken salad and pimento cheese are waiting up the road in West Feliciana Parish.
From food truck to front porch
Basel's started as a food truck in 2017. After four years on the road, owner Kalyn Anderson moved indoors and opened her first brick-and-mortar cafe on Highland Road in Baton Rouge. Her inspiration came from her family's long run at Calvin's Bocage Market, and she brought the same care for quality into her own place.
In 2024, Basel's moved to historic St. Francisville. It started out on Commerce Street and has now settled into a restored home at 11892 Ferdinand St. The cottage, with its white siding and striped awning, fits right in among the town's old houses.
On the menu
Breakfast is simple and made to order. There's a bacon, fried egg and cheese sandwich for $8, a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit with a choice of strawberry, grape or fig jam for $9, and grits for $5 (add Kalyn's pimento cheese for $2).
At lunch, the sandwiches are named after herbs. The Basil ($12) stacks turkey, bacon, avocado and mild cheddar on multigrain with honey mustard. The Chive ($15) puts fig jam, turkey, ham, pepperoni and provolone on ciabatta. The Dill ($15) is hot roast beef on ciabatta with au jus. If you want a little of everything, the Trio Sampler ($14) pairs pimento cheese, Mexican corn dip and Calvin's chicken salad with crackers. Wine is also available by the bottle.
Planning a gathering?
For holiday parties, the catering menu includes croissant trays with chicken salad ($75 medium, $95 large), signature sandwich trays and a 25-cookie tray for $125.
Basel's is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 225-245-5078 to order ahead, and make it part of a day trip to St. Francisville.
