Some Baton Rouge families measure time in Thanksgivings. The Dedman family measures it in biscuits, and they have been rolling them out on Airline Highway since May 1964.
That was the year Frank Dedman Sr. and his wife, Carolyn, opened Frank's Restaurant at what is still the original location, 8353 Airline Hwy. The menu leaned Louisiana and country-style, breakfast was served all day, and the biscuit recipe became the thing people drove across town for. Three generations later, the family still stakes its name on them as the best homemade biscuits anywhere.
Three generations at the stove
Frank Jr. joined as a partner in July 1982 and took over the restaurant when his father retired 16 years later. Frank Sr. kept showing up as a customer, often with family in tow, until he passed away in 2023. In 2004 the family opened a second Frank's at 17425 Airline Hwy. in Prairieville, which stays open past lunch with dinner, seasonal crawfish, crabs and oysters, bar drinks, a patio remodeled in 2023 and a country gift shop. Frank III became owner and president in May 2021.
