Hockey has a new name in Baton Rouge, and it's an old one. The Baton Rouge Kingfish of the Federal Prospects Hockey League dropped the puck on their first season this month at Raising Cane's River Center, the first Kingfish game in town in 23 years, and the team has wasted no time giving fans something to cheer about.
A perfect opening weekend
The Kingfish swept a home-and-home with the Monroe Moccasins, winning both games 6-2. Friday's home opener turned in the third period, when Baton Rouge scored three power-play goals in less than three and a half minutes. Forward Jake Cox scored the first goal in franchise history and added another, Jason Brancheau scored the game-winner, and goaltender Ed Coffey picked up both wins. It was also the first professional win for head coach Jimmy Soper, a former Knoxville Ice Bears captain.
When to catch them downtown
The next home game is a Sunday matinee on Oct. 25 at 4:05 p.m. against the Mid-South Monarchs, billed as both Breast Cancer Awareness Night and Greek Night. After a long road stretch, the team returns home for these dates:
Friday, Nov. 20 vs. Monroe Moccasins
Friday, Nov. 27 vs. Mid-South Monarchs
Friday, Dec. 11, and Saturday, Dec. 12, vs. Oceanside HC
Friday, Dec. 18, and Saturday, Dec. 19, vs. Columbus River Dragons
Saturday, Jan. 2 vs. Monroe Moccasins
That Nov. 27 date is the day after Thanksgiving, which makes it an easy way to get the whole family out of the house.
