Few dinner spots in Baton Rouge come with a view like this one. Head up to the top of the Shaw Center for the Arts downtown and you'll find Tsunami, a sushi restaurant with a 4,000-square-foot open-air terrace looking out over the Mississippi River.

Tsunami has been part of downtown since 2005. It started in Lafayette in 1999 and later added New Orleans, and each location sits in the middle of its city's downtown arts scene. The restaurant likes to describe itself as sometimes funky and sometimes fancy, and the menu backs that up.

You'll find the expected rolls, nigiri and sashimi, plus plenty with a South Louisiana twist. The Big Easy roll packs crawfish, snow crab mix and fried shrimp into a soy wrap that gets panko fried. The Black & Gold roll is baked with crunchy shrimp and spicy mayo, then topped with crawfish. Small plates include Gyoza Umami, shishito peppers with tempura black tiger shrimp, and Ika Fries made from strips of calamari. If sushi isn't your thing, grilled fish, chicken and pork round out the menu.

The terrace is the big draw at happy hour. Recent specials on Tsunami's site include $6 martinis, $5 house wine, select draft beers and house sake, and 25% off rolls $10 and under, along with early bird deals on select nigiri and sashimi. Times and offers change by day, so check the specials page before heading over.

Planning the office party? Tsunami is booking holiday dinners and parties now and also offers catering for corporate events, birthdays and weddings. Reservations are recommended for regular dinners too, and if you bring your own cake or bottle, expect a $15 dessert fee or $20 cork fee.

Tsunami is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and closed Sunday and Monday. Call (225) 346-5100 or book online, then grab a seat outside and watch the sun go down over the river.
