Two of BREC's best-loved spots have special days on the calendar over the next week, and both make an easy family outing close to home.

Veterans Day at the Zoo: Saturday, Nov. 7

BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo is saluting the people who serve. On Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., active first responders and military personnel, along with veterans, get free admission for themselves and up to three guests. Just show a valid first responder or military ID, active or retired, at the admissions gate. BREC's event listing also promises a special Bald Eagle chat as part of the day.

Everyone else pays regular admission:

Adults and teens, $10 plus tax

Seniors 65 and older, $8.50 plus tax

Children 2-12, $7 plus tax

Children 1 and under, free

The Zoo is at 3000 Zoo Circle, next to Greenwood Community Park. Gates close at 4 p.m. and the grounds close at 5 p.m. If the main lot fills up, use the overflow parking near the dog park and walk in along the Bayou Promenade path.

Swamp Flashlight Night: Friday, Nov. 13

A week later, Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center at 10503 N. Oak Hills Parkway is open after dark from 5 to 9 p.m. Families can take a self-guided night hike on the boardwalks and gravel trails, and staff will host live animal encounters during the evening. Guided hikes cost extra and have limited space, and BREC asks that you register for them in person.

Regular admission applies, and Bluebonnet Swamp members get in free. Trail entry ends at 8:15 p.m. The event is for ages 3 and up.

Bring a flashlight, because the trails get very dark (the gift shop sells them if you forget). Closed-toe shoes and bug spray are a good idea. For questions, call 225-757-8905 or email [email protected].

Mark both on the calendar: a morning with the animals, then an evening on the boardwalk under the trees.
