Fall in Baton Rouge may not always come with sweater weather, but that has never stopped us from celebrating the season.

October is officially here, and the Capital City’s calendar is packed with live music, pumpkins, football, haunted attractions and plenty of excuses to get outside. Whether you’re looking for a family outing, a date night or simply something different to do this weekend, consider this your challenge to make the most of fall before November sneaks up on us.

Here are 15 things to check off your Baton Rouge fall bucket list this October.

1. Get lost in the Corn Maze at Burden

Nothing says fall quite like a corn maze. The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens brings back its annual Corn Maze at Burden throughout October, complete with hayrides, a sunflower field, pumpkin patch, petting farm and plenty of fall photo opportunities.

For anyone looking for a slightly different experience, the Night Maze returns Oct. 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets for the Corn Maze are presale only and are offered in timed sessions throughout the month.

2. Spend a Thursday night at Rock N Rowe

Take advantage of the cooler evenings with free live music at Perkins Rowe. Rock N Rowe continues every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. through Oct. 29.

The October lineup includes Lee Serio Band on Oct. 8, Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band on Oct. 15, 2 Domestic 1 Import on Oct. 22 and Werewolf closing out the series on Oct. 29.

Bring a lawn chair, grab dinner or drinks nearby and make a night of it.

3. Have a proper patio night

We spend enough of the Louisiana summer sprinting from one air-conditioned building to another. When October finally gives us an evening that does not feel like walking directly into a sauna, take advantage of it.

Pick a Baton Rouge restaurant with a patio, order something good, bring your favorite people and stay awhile. Bonus points if the table ends up covered in appetizers and seasonal cocktails.

4. Visit a pumpkin patch

You are never too old for a pumpkin patch.

Grab the kids, your significant other or the friend who will happily take 47 pictures of you until you get the right one. Pick out a pumpkin, take the obligatory fall photos and bring one home to carve before Halloween.

The Corn Maze at Burden includes a pumpkin patch as part of its October festivities, making it easy to knock two items off this list at once.

5. Go to a haunted attraction

October is your annual opportunity to voluntarily pay someone to scare you, so embrace it.

Baton Rouge has no shortage of spooky experiences this month. Whether you want a full-fledged haunted attraction or something a little more family-friendly, there are plenty of opportunities to test how brave you actually are.

If screaming your way through October is not your idea of fun, watching everyone else get scared absolutely counts.

6. Spend a Saturday morning shopping local

Slow down for a Saturday morning and explore some of Baton Rouge’s local makers.

The Red Stick Farmers Market takes place downtown on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, making it an easy stop for seasonal produce, local food and a few things you probably did not plan on buying when you left the house.

Grab breakfast while you are downtown and turn the trip into a full morning.

7. Catch some live music

Fall and live music just belong together.

Beyond Rock N Rowe, October brings plenty of opportunities to hear live music around Baton Rouge. Live After 5 continues downtown on select Fridays this month with free performances, food and drinks.

Grab a group, head downtown after work and officially start the weekend outside.

8. Order something that tastes like fall

We are officially giving you permission to be influenced by the season.

Find the pumpkin, cinnamon, apple, maple or pecan item that catches your eye and order it. Baton Rouge restaurants, bakeries and bars are rolling out seasonal specials, which means there is no better time to try something that may disappear once fall is over.

And yes, a fall cocktail counts.

9. Plan a fall date night

Your fall plans do not have to revolve around a major event.

Pick somewhere you have never eaten, split an appetizer, take a walk afterward or add an activity before dinner. Go see live music. Catch a movie. Visit the corn maze. Find dessert somewhere else after dinner.

The goal is simple: get out of your usual date-night rotation.

10. Do something spooky with the kids

For families who want Halloween fun without the nightmares afterward, Baton Rouge has several kid-friendly options this month.

Boo at the Zoo returns Oct. 17-18 and Oct. 24-25, while Swamp Haunted Hikes at Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center takes place Oct. 16. Families can also look forward to Haints, Haunts & Halloween at the LSU Rural Life Museum on Oct. 25.

Costumes encouraged.

11. Tailgate for a Louisiana football game

It would be impossible to make a Louisiana fall bucket list without football.

Whether you are cheering from inside the stadium, tailgating outside or watching from your favorite local spot, dedicate at least one Saturday to doing game day properly.

Wear the team colors, bring something good to eat and accept that your Saturday plans now revolve around kickoff.

12. Have a fall picnic

This one requires almost no planning.

Grab takeout from a local restaurant, pack a blanket and head somewhere outdoors. Bring the kids, make it a date or gather a few friends.

October gives Baton Rouge a short window when eating outside actually sounds appealing. Use it.

13. Find your favorite fall cocktail

Consider this research.

Baton Rouge bars and restaurants tend to embrace seasonal menus this time of year, so make it your mission to find the drink that deserves a repeat order.

Bourbon, apple, cinnamon, pear, maple and other fall flavors are officially fair game. Just make sure you have a safe ride home if your "research" requires multiple stops.

14. Take one night completely offline

Not every fall memory needs to become an Instagram Story.

Pick one evening this month, put the phone away and actually enjoy whatever you planned. Go to dinner. Sit outside. Walk around downtown. Listen to live music. Carve pumpkins at home.

You can post about it tomorrow.

15. Make Halloween plans before Oct. 31

Do not be the person texting the group chat at 7:14 p.m. on Halloween asking, "So what are we doing?"

Baton Rouge's Halloween calendar fills up throughout October, with haunted attractions, family events, parties and special events happening across the city.

Pick your plans now, figure out the costume and end October with something worth leaving the house for.

How many can you check off?

October moves quickly, and Baton Rouge has plenty happening before the month is over. Whether you check off all 15 or just use this list as an excuse to try something new, get out and enjoy the Capital City while fall is here.

And if you do complete the list, tag DIG Baton Rouge along the way. We want to see what you checked off first.
