Some po-boy shops are built for a quick lunch. Fat Daddy's Po-Boy and Bar-B-Q Shack in downtown Plaquemine handles that well, and it also gives you a reason to stick around.
The family restaurant at 57950 Labauve Ave. has been feeding Plaquemine for decades. Its menu stays rooted in Louisiana sandwiches, smoked meats and fried seafood.
The po-boy to order first
The signature order is Sharon's Special: hot roast beef, melted Swiss, onions, gravy and mayo, $11.99 for a whole. The Fat Daddy's Special stacks ham, turkey and roast beef with American and Swiss.
Seafood fans can go with shrimp, fish or a half-and-half combo. There's also a NOLA Debris po-boy with pot roast. Two muffulettas share the menu, a classic Italian and a seafood version with shrimp and fish.
Barbecue by the pound
The other half of the name gets real attention. Dinners come with two sides and include pork ribs, pulled pork, a smoked leg quarter and smoked brisket. A two-meat plate lets you mix them.
Sides run from dirty rice and barbecue beans to fried okra and sweet potato fries. Finish with bread pudding for $3.99.
Lil Daddy's, a few steps away
Right next door, Lil Daddy's serves the same menu in a sports bar setting with a more grown-up feel. Happy hour runs 4 to 6 p.m., and the restaurant says live music plays every Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m.
