Some Baton Rouge breakfast habits are older than the kids ordering them. NYB opened in 1996, and the locally owned bagel shop has spent the three decades since baking its bagels in house, from scratch, every day.
That one shop has grown into three. You'll find NYB at 8342 Perkins Road, at 4410 Highland Road near LSU, and at 13200 Airline Highway, where the counter sits inside Price LeBlanc Toyota next to the service department. That last one is a handy trick if your car needs an oil change and you need a coffee.
The bagel chips come first
NYB calls them famous, and they earn the word. The shop turns its house-made bagels into bagel chips, served with a homemade garden veggie cream cheese dip. Breakfast sandwiches come with cinnamon sugar bagel chips instead, and you can add a cream cheese dip for $1.09.
Sandwiches with New York names
The specialty sandwich board reads like a subway map. The New Yorker stacks nova lox with cream cheese, capers and red onion. The Manhattan Skyscraper brings pastrami and melted mozzarella with deli mustard, while the Cabbie keeps it simple with corned beef, Swiss and brown mustard. There's a Reuben, a spicy-mayo Brooklyn Bomber with deli chicken and Havarti, and a veggie-packed Central Park. Every one can go on a bagel, bread or a croissant.
Mornings bring bagels with schmear, avocado toast on a bagel, and a steak, egg and cheese built on Philly steak.
Feeding the office this season
Holiday meetings are where NYB's catering menu earns its keep. Trays include a bagel platter of 15 bagels with three containers of house cream cheese, a lox platter with a dozen bagels, a morning sweet tray of muffins, cinnamon rolls and scones, and an executive platter of 10 bagel sandwiches. Orders can be placed online or through any location.
Pick your closest shop, grab a bag of chips, and see why this one has lasted.
