Plant-based cooking and a proper English-style tea service might not sound like an obvious pair. At The Plantry Cafe on Bluebonnet Boulevard, they share the same roof, along with a piano singer on Friday nights and a mahjong table on select Sundays.

Afternoon tea on Sundays

Plantry hosts tea parties every Sunday in The Tea Room, with seatings from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. by RSVP. The Signature Afternoon Tea ($65 per adult, $35 per child) is a tiered service with the chef's choice of tea sandwiches, almond flour biscuits with clotted cream, toasted croissants, scones with gourmet jam and pastries. Everything is plant-based, and gluten-free options are available.

Lighter options include the Patisserie Tea ($40) and the Croissant Tea ($24). Prices are before tax and a 20% gratuity, and children should be at least 5. Wine, champagne and cocktails are sold a la carte.

Fridays and Sunday brunch

On Fridays, the cafe serves lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a seasonal menu that pushes vegetables into fine-dining territory. Singer Karin Danger, who worked in Bourbon Street piano bars after moving to the U.S. from Australia, performs on Friday evenings. Sunday brunch runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Southern twists. Reservations are encouraged.

Mahjong and holiday gatherings

Mahjong lessons and social play return Sunday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. RSVP ahead.

With the holidays coming, the Tea Room seats 16 to 20 for small private parties or 40 to 50 for the full room, and Plantry can host up to 125 guests. It also caters off-site with setup, bar service and staffing. Custom cakes and cheesecakes need two weeks' notice. Chef-curated meal plans are on the way.
