Mardi Gras on a Bun: The King Cake Burger Has Entered the Chat
At DIG, we’re fully in the Mardi Gras spirit—and it turns out Our Mom’s Restaurant is right there with us. This season, the beloved local spot is serving up something that feels equal parts playful, thoughtful, and unmistakably Louisiana: the King Cake Burger.
When we caught up with owner JP Ngo, it was clear this wasn’t just about creating a gimmick—it was about celebrating Mardi Gras the right way: through collaboration, creativity, and really good food.
“The King Cake Burger was our way of celebrating Mardi Gras by working with people we trust and letting the food lead,” JP shared.
And that philosophy shows up in every layer of the burger. Our Mom’s partnered with Thee Heavenly Donut to create a King Cake–style bun made exclusively for the restaurant. Yes, exclusively. The bun brings that familiar Mardi Gras sweetness, but the real magic is in how it’s balanced.
“We partnered with Thee Heavenly Donut to create a King Cake–style bun exclusively for Our Mom’s, then designed the burger to balance that sweetness with a rich, savory bite,” JP explained.
This isn’t a dessert masquerading as a burger—it’s a thoughtfully built, crave-worthy dish that surprises you in the best way. Sweet meets savory, festive meets comforting, all wrapped up in a bite that feels intentional and deeply rooted in Louisiana food culture.
And just like Mardi Gras itself, it’s not meant to last forever.
“It’s intentionally seasonal, meant to feel distinctly Louisiana, and only lives during Mardi Gras.”
That limited-time nature makes it even more special. It’s a reminder to lean into the season, support local collaborations, and enjoy the creativity that comes out when chefs let the moment—and the culture—lead.
So if you’re feeling the Mardi Gras spirit (and we definitely are), consider this your sign. The King Cake Burger is here for the season, and once it’s gone, it’s gone—just like parade beads on Ash Wednesday.
